In the video “You will wish you watched this before you started using social media | The Twisted Truth”, Is showing us how Social Media is changing us or actually how IT changed us. Social media is addictive and we can’t control or limit the use of it. In Inside “IQ” quest with Tom Bilyeu the special guest, Jim Kwik, explains how there is such thing as “Social Media Depression” and he tells us how bad is impacting our health and social life. He says “everyone’s looking at their feed and they’re comparing their lives to highlights of other people’s lives and there’s less satisfaction, more sadness, depression and stuff like that, because everyone is comparing themselves to what other people are posting”; Tom Bilyeu focuses on the addiction to social media and the cause of it, and is ruining our lives. In reality, every one compares themselves, social media or not, people still do it; but the fact that we end up going deeper into other people’s lives and actually seeing what they are up to and what they eat, do, wear, etc; is beyond extreme. There have been studies that show “The more you use social media the more likely to feel lonely” this actually shows how people feel lonely because they are comparing themselves to other people or how they are looking at things that they don’t have for example a partner, big house, car of the year, latest new phone, the body they want, stuff like this makes them not feel good about themselves because they might not be able to get that.
Chamath Palinapitiya, the Ex-facebook executive, sees the world differently now that he is not working for Facebook no more and likes to tell us the effects that we are receiving. He claims that “social media is tearing society apart” on the video he claims that, “we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works……you don’t realize it but you are being programed”. The way that he brings this up Just by telling us how bad this is going over time and how we are being controlled it is very unreal; Palinapitiya decided to tell the Twisted Truth behind something that is being used 24/7 by people and “This is a global problem”. The way that people in the video describe social media is totally the opposite of positive and they say it that way because they are trying to tell us the truth behind it. The point of social media is that the tools behind it are designed to be addicted. When we get a notification on our phone like let’s say perhaps Instagram, you posted a picture and you are putting the last filter and comment the make the picture and the caption Way better than the before pictures on your timeline; you keep refreshing Instagram to see if you get any likes before 5-10 minutes, you are just that addicted that you keep track on who will like it first/fast and who will comment something bad/good. You just can’t keep your mind off, of something that people will judge of.
Social media is part of our lives and you choose how to control it because is what you do on the internet and what information you share. In my personal opinion I feel like social media has taken over our lives because you literally see 12-13 year old’s posting on social media that they are having “Netflix and chill @.....”, around that age I was outside playing tag or hide and seek; Even going to the public library during summer to read up to ten books and see what the librarian would give me as a gift. I bet kids these days don’t know how it was back then but is scarier for the younger generation that is getting technology in their hands and with a click of a button opening Social Media. Time has changed and social media might change it even more, you walk, drive, go to any public place, you will see how attached people are to their phone. The twisted truth behind social media is scary, we are being controlled in a way but social media is like a Drug as well and we are addicted to it.
